Wat is er leuker dan een uitstekend boek met goede representatie, geschreven door iemand die er alles van kent én goede research heeft gedaan? Niets. Vandaag geef ik vijf boekentips voor lezers die houden van het genre contemporary en romantiek, maar die graag ook eens andere culturen verkennen.
A Match Made in Mehendi – Nandini Bajpai (niet vertaald)
Fifteen-year-old Simran Simi Sangha comes from a long line of Indian vichole–matchmakers–with a rich history for helping parents find good matches for their grown children. When Simi accidentally sets up her cousin and a wealthy local businessman, her family is thrilled that she has the gift. But Simi is an artist, and she doesn’t want to have anything to do with relationships, helicopter parents, and family drama. That is, until she realizes this might just be the thing to get her and her best friend Noah to finally be popular. Armed with her family’s ancient guide to finding love, Simi starts a matchmaking service–via an app, of course. Dit is wellicht mijn recentste favoriet en het is niet echt een boek dat zo bekend is. A Match Made in Mehendi staat helemaal in het teken van de Indische matchmakingcultuur. Het is een lachwekkende rom-com met romantiek, maar niet te veel. Dit boek tovert bij elke bladzijde een glimlach op je gezicht en laat je helemaal thuisvoelen in de Amerikaans-Indische gemeenschap.
The Poet X – Elizabeth Acevedo (niet vertaald)
Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking.
But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers, especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, who her family can never know about.
With Mami’s determination to force her daughter to obey the laws of the church, Xiomara understands that her thoughts are best kept to herself. Ik blijf erbij: ik hou van Elizabeth Acevedo en haar sterk en hartbrekend taalgebruik. Dit boek is een zoektocht, vol liefde en tegenstellingen en worstelingen. Ik kan het niet anders omschrijven. Het is alweer even geleden dat ik het las, maar ik heb gewoon nu alweer zin om dit boek te lezen. Om je te overtuigen voeg ik even een van mijn favoriete quotes toe:
He is not elegant enough for a sonnet,

too well-thought for a free-write,
taking to much space in my thoughts
to ever be a haiku.
When Dimple Met Rishi – Sandhya Menon (niet vertaald)
Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the ‘Ideal Indian Husband.’ Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?
Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him – wherein he’ll have to woo her – he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, because he believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.
The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this ‘suggested arrangement’ so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?
Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways . . .
Heb je al door dat ik echt een fan ben van contemporary met Indische invloeden? Wel, nu wel. When Dimple Met Rishi is echt een hilarisch boek over identiteit, familie en je dromen durven waarmaken. Bovendien is dit boek ook nog eens hilarisch romantisch en heeft dit boek ook nog eens drie vervolgen als je er niet genoeg van krijgt.
Full Disclosure – Camryn Garrett (niet vertaald)
Simone is HIV-positive – and positive HIV won’t define her. She also knows that celibacy is the best way to stay safe. Enter Miles Austin: intelligent, funny and way too sexy for Simone to resist. But her classmates don’t know that she’s HIV-positive – and what is the truth worth in the hands of the wrong person?
Je denkt het waarschijnlijk niet, maar dit boek was ontzettend leerrijk en romantisch. Het gaat over opgroeien met AIDS zijn en alle vooroordelen die daarmee verbonden zijn, maar het gaat ook over omgaan met seksualiteit, vriendschap en liefde. Garrett weet op zo’n fijne manier zoveel zware onderwerpen aan te kaarten en dat doet ze zo goed. Je begint hoofdstuk één al met een glimlach.
67 seconden – Jason Reynolds (vertaald)
Zevenenzestig seconden. Zeven verdiepingen. Drie regels. Een wapen.
Will staat 67 seconden in de lift naar beneden, met in zijn broekband een pistool. Zijn broer Shawn is vermoord, en Will weet wat er van hem verwacht wordt. Niet snitchen. Niet huilen. Wraak.
67 seconden is gewoon een steengoed boek (in vrije vers zoals The Poet X). Het sleurt je mee in een onvergetelijke rit. Het laat je over zoveel aspecten nadenken én dat is gewoonweg geweldig. Het is bovendien ook zo goed vertaald door Maria Postema. Echt steengoed.
Maar een kleine greep
Ik koos ervoor om in deze blogpost vijf boeken te noemen die ik zelf gelezen heb én die ik ook steengoed vond, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat er niet nog geweldige boeken bestaan. Rima Orie, auteur van De Zwendelprins, maakte een heel mooi draadje op Twitter met aanraders geschreven door zwarte auteurs waar ik je graag naartoe verwijs als je nog meer boekentips zoekt.
